What is an STI Screen, and Who Should Have One?

An STI screen is a thorough examination or set of tests designed to identify the presence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in an individual. These screenings are essential for anyone who is sexually active, as many STIs may not exhibit immediate symptoms. Detecting and treating infections early not only safeguards individual health but also prevents the spread of STIs to others.

Who Should Have an STI Screen?

  1. Sexually Active Individuals: Anyone engaging in sexual activity, whether through vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse, should consider regular STI screening, regardless of age.

  2. New Sexual Partners: If you've recently begun a sexual relationship with a new partner, it's advisable for both individuals to undergo an STI screen to ensure a healthy start.

  3. Multiple Sexual Partners: Individuals with multiple sexual partners, or those in non-monogamous relationships, may benefit from more frequent STI screening to address increased exposure risk.

  4. Symptoms or Concerns: If you experience any symptoms of an STI, such as unusual discharge, pain during intercourse, genital sores, or discomfort while urinating, prompt screening is crucial.

  5. Pregnant Individuals: Routine STI screening is often recommended during pregnancy to protect both the pregnant individual and the unborn child.

  6. HIV Risk Factors: Those with specific risk factors for HIV, such as engaging in unprotected sex with an HIV-positive partner or using intravenous drugs, should undergo regular HIV testing.
